Nicholas Hewlett sits down with a calm and poised energy for our Zoom chat. Academic books are organised neatly on the shelves behind him and a dark wooden art piece hangs boldly above his left shoulder.
The headmaster of St. Dunstan’s College in Catford made waves in the news at the start of LGBTQ+ history month in February this year after he came out to his staff and pupils in an assembly on February 1 2021.
Enjoying the Easter break in the casual form of a navy-blue polo shirt, he still looks as put together as he would in the more familiar work attire of his suit and tie.

A school headmaster in Catford marked the start of LGBT+ History Month with an inspiring move of openness and acceptance.
Nicholas Hewlett from St Dunstan’s College came out to his staff and pupils through an online assembly on February 1.
Hewlett, whose announcement has been picked up by national media organisations, said in a tweet: “The fact that this is still news of course tells its own story, but if it can help just one young person feel more comfortable in their skin, it is surely an act worth doing.”

If you doubt Mr Hewlett’s wisdom in exiting the closet in front of the entire school, it is a shame you didn’t hear the response of one of my radio colleagues who attended a Catholic school. “Oh my goodness,” he said, close to tears. “If my headmaster had done that my life would have been transformed.”
Headmaster Comes Out To Students, Faculty in Virtual Assembly

A headmaster at an exclusive private school in the United Kingdom is believed to have made history yesterday when he came out to students and faculty at the start of the school’s LGBTQ week. Nicholas Hewlett made the revelation to his students at St. Dunstan’s College in Catford, southeast London, during a virtual assembly Monday, according to
The Times.
“My only regret is not doing it earlier, because seven years of children will have gone through the school without the benefit of a role model.” Hewlett told the
