When I look back to my own sex education lessons (well, lesson) I’m sure it was cutting edge for 1979. But I’m not sure what we learnt. I had heard tell of classes where teens were shown how to put a condom on to a banana. But that didn’t happen in my girls’ school biology lesson. We didn’t even see a condom. Let alone anything but the most technical picture of what non-fruit item was supposed to go into one.

A school headmaster in Catford marked the start of LGBT+ History Month with an inspiring move of openness and acceptance.
Nicholas Hewlett from St Dunstan’s College came out to his staff and pupils through an online assembly on February 1.
Hewlett, whose announcement has been picked up by national media organisations, said in a tweet: “The fact that this is still news of course tells its own story, but if it can help just one young person feel more comfortable in their skin, it is surely an act worth doing.”
A headteacher at an exclusive private school has made history by coming out as gay and discussing his sexuality in a virtual school assembly on Monday.
Nicholas Hewlett, headteacher at the £18,000-a-year St Dunstan s College in Catford, told students and staff that he is happily gay and in a same-sex relationship .
It is thought that the announcement to students by a headteacher is the first of its kind in educational history.
The 41-year-old s assembly marks the start of the school s LGBTQ week and the beginning of LGBTQ History Month.
Exploring the school s history, he told the real-life story of a former teacher at St Dunstan s who in the 1980s faced criticism for being an openly gay educator.

A headmaster in Britain is set to make “education history” by coming out as gay during an online school assembly Monday (1 February) – and he knows he’s going to cry.
Nicholas Hewlett, who leads St Dunstan’s College in the Catford neighbourhood of southeast London, said a conversation with a student who spoke about being gay bolstered him to do the same ahead of the school’s LGBT+ Week.
In doing so,
The Timesreported, Hewlett is thought to be the first acting headteacher to come out in front of his students and staff.
“Not long ago I was doing interviews with the pupils, and one of them was talking about how comfortable he was about being gay,” Hewlett said.
