The White House says roughly 200 million people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the rate of vaccination is slowing down, and that s happening in some parts of our area. Ten of the 23 health districts in the state of Nebraska have declined new vaccine allotments this week as fewer people are jumping in line to get vaccinated. Julie Rother, Health Director of Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department, said she has seen a major change in their efforts.

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Nearly two weeks into the new year, local health departments are reporting a steady increase in new COVID-19 cases after a big decrease at the end of the year. On Jan. 3, it marked a recent low point in the South Heartland District Health Department of about 42 new COVID cases a day for the rolling average. Now as cases increase, that number is reaching into the 50′s again.

Southern Heartland Arts honors founder, gallery director Elise Hammond Elise Hammond Gallery Director Elise McCauley Hammond was honored by the Southern Heartland Arts (SHA) during its January meeting for her efforts in the creation and sustainment of the Newton County organization.   The board recognized Hammond’s many contributions to SHA from the formation of the organization one of the oldest art guilds in metro Atlanta started more than 35 years ago to Hammond’s petition to the Internal Revenue Service for its nonprofit standing in 1988, to the 17 years she chaired the Southern Heartland Art Festival held at Salem Campground, to her role in obtaining the lease of the Cohen building on the corner of Washington & Monticello Streets for a permanent home for Southern Heartland Arts, Inc., its art guild, gallery and exhibition space, to serving as gallery director from September 2004 til present day.
