Gallery Director Elise McCauley Hammond was honored by the Southern Heartland Arts (SHA) during its January meeting for her efforts in the creation and sustainment of the Newton County organization.
The board recognized Hammond’s many contributions to SHA from the formation of the organization one of the oldest art guilds in metro Atlanta started more than 35 years ago to Hammond’s petition to the Internal Revenue Service for its nonprofit standing in 1988, to the 17 years she chaired the Southern Heartland Art Festival held at Salem Campground, to her role in obtaining the lease of the Cohen building on the corner of Washington & Monticello Streets for a permanent home for Southern Heartland Arts, Inc., its art guild, gallery and exhibition space, to serving as gallery director from September 2004 til present day.
MOROCCO â North Newtonâs outgoing board president, Mike Russell, led his final meeting on Monday, December 14, 2020. Mr. Russell has served on the board since 2012, and since 2016, he has led the board as president. Russell began by thanking his fellow board members and the North Newton administration. He said how everyoneâs job is important and challenging, especially in 2020 with the Coronavirus. Russell further expressed his appreciation for Deb Miller, saying that she is âinvaluable.
In his typical fashion, Russell thanked the meeting attendees, specifically the âregularsâ for their support for the school. One of his favorite portions of the meetings has always been the recognition of the students and staff for their achievements beyond the expected. This month, student recipients are Beau Hickel, Wyatt Wilkins, Zoe Williamson, Aubrey Eller, Sofia Diaz, and Jakob Wilson.
