Candlelight vigil held for Henninger grad killed in Syracuse house fire

Syracuse, N. Y. Mahogany Starling’s family stood on the sidewalk in front of a Garfield Avenue house surrounded by more than 100 friends and neighbors during a vigil Saturday night.
“My mom’s first baby is gone,” said Cora Starling, Mahogany’s sister. “My mother and my father and my brothers and sisters needed this (vigil) right now.”

The woman has not yet been identified.
Firefighters rushed to 521 Garfield Avenue at 4:41 p.m. Wednesday to find heavy smoke and fire in the attic of the 2 ½ story, wood-frame home, according to a Syracuse Fire Department news release.
They entered the home and encountered tremendous heat and zero visibility while searching for the woman, who was trapped, officials said. After a few minutes, they found the woman, they said. She was unconscious when they found her, according to officials.

Syracuse firefighters battle fire in vacant North Side home

Syracuse, NY A two-story vacant home on Syracuse’s North Site was heavily damaged by fire early Friday, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.
Firefighters responded at 12:33 a.m. to the fire at 704 N. Alvord St., the fire department said in a news release.
A passerby called 911 after noticing flames in the home.
Firefighters searched the home and found heavy fire conditions, officials said. No one was found inside, they said.
It took approximately 30 minutes to put out the fire, they said.
Members of the Fire Investigation Bureau are working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
