Springfield mayor, fire chief discuss department budget cuts

Springfield Fire Chief Brandon Blough said he will continue to look at the department s budget in light of an amendment that trimmed away $1.4 million last week and Mayor Jim Langfelder s call to hold the line on any layoffs. Langfelder and Blough met with city budget director Bill McCarty, Corporation Counsel Jim Zerkle, SFD operations chief Jeph Bassett and other personnel Tuesday ahead of the city council meeting. On Monday, Blough said he visited several fire houses to talk to firefighters about the reality of personnel cuts. Blough said about the meeting with the mayor that there were some constructive issues addressed by some impassioned people in the room.

Aldermen Approve Reduction In Fire Department Budget

By WMAY Newsroom (Kyle Hutchinson / Mid-West Family Broadcasting) The Springfield City Council has voted to trim $1.4 million from the proposed fire department budget. Alderman Chuck Redpath proposed the across-the-board reduction, noting that fire department costs have outpaced both the police and public works departments in recent years. Budget director Bill McCarty says without adjusting those trends, the city won’t be able to keep pace with those expenses in future years without draining its fund balance or having to resort to tax hikes. The firefighters union says such cuts are a blow to the department’s morale. Redpath says it’s up to Fire Chief Brandon Blough and the mayor’s office to determine how to implement the cuts.

Langfelder offers police chief 5% raise to stay in Springfield

Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder has offered Police Chief Kenny Winslow a 5% pay raise in hopes of convincing the capital city s longtime top cop to stay on the job.  Winslow, 50, Springfield s police chief since 2013, confirmed in an email to the city s aldermen Sunday evening that he tentatively accepted an offer to become a deputy chief of the police department in Franklin, Tennessee, a mid-sized town about 20 miles south of Nashville.  Winslow s hiring and a Jan. 19 start date were already announced in a news release from Franklin city government last Thursday. But, Winslow has not yet resigned his position in Springfield, saying that he and his family are truly torn on whether to leave for Tennessee or stay here.
