28 Years After Murder of Kerala s Sister Abhaya, Accused Priest, Nun Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

The two prime accused found guilty of killing teenaged nun Sister Abhaya have been sentenced to life imprisonment, almost 28 years after the gruesome murder shook the country.
The punishment for the duo in the longest-running investigation was pronounced by CBI special court judge K Sanal Kumar who also slapped a penalty of five lakh rupees on the two convicts.
Twenty-one-year-old sister Abhaya was found dead in the well of Pius X convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992. The first accused priest, father Thomas Kottoor, and third accused sister Sephy faced trial.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday sentenced a priest and a nun to life imrisonment in connection with Sister Abhaya murder case.Â
The special CBI court sentenced accused Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy to life term holding them responsible for the murder of 19-year-old nun Abhaya in 1992. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 6.50 lakh and Rs 5.50 lakh respectively on the two convicts, news agency ANI reported.
The Special court had said the accused were guilty of murder in the case under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (tamperingof evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

A CBI special court on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment the catholic priest and nun, who were found guilty of the murder of Sister Abhaya 28 years ago in Kottayam. Special CBI Judge K Sanal Kumar pronounced the sentence against two accused Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy, and slapped a fine of Rs five lakh on each of them.
The court had on Tuesday found the two guilty of the murder of Sister Abhaya, who was found dead in a well in St Pius convent in Kottayam in 1992. The duo was also sentenced to seven years imprisonment for tampering with evidence.
