On Tuesday, the court pronounced that Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy were held guilty of murder and destruction of the evidence. The priest who taught sister Abhaya psychology at BCM college Kottayam was also convicted of house trespassing during midnight.

The two prime accused found guilty of killing teenaged nun Sister Abhaya have been sentenced to life imprisonment, almost 28 years after the gruesome murder shook the country.
The punishment for the duo in the longest-running investigation was pronounced by CBI special court judge K Sanal Kumar who also slapped a penalty of five lakh rupees on the two convicts.
Twenty-one-year-old sister Abhaya was found dead in the well of Pius X convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992. The first accused priest, father Thomas Kottoor, and third accused sister Sephy faced trial.

Terming unbelievable the allegations against Fr. Thomas Kottoor and Sr. Stephy, who have been convicted in the murder of Sister Abhaya, the Knanaya Catholic Church on Wednesday asserted the right of the accused to go for an appeal and prove their innocence.
“The death of Sr. Abhaya was indeed a sad and unfortunate episode. The special CBI court has found that she was murdered by Fr. Thomas Kottoor and Sr. Sephy and has awarded them life imprisonment. The allegations against them are unbelievable. However, the Knanaya Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam honours the court order. The accused persons have the right to go for an appeal against the order and prove their innocence,” the archdiocese said in a statement.
