Cooper reappointed to WCU Board of Trustees   CULLOWHEE – The University of North Carolina Board of Governors appointed Timothy “Jake” Robinson of Canton, to the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees, while also reappointing current board members, Robert “Bob” Roberts of Asheville, Haden Boliek of Fayetteville, and Casey Cooper of Cherokee at its meeting Thursday, April 22. The board appointments will take effect July 1 through June 30, 2025. Cooper is the chief executive officer of Cherokee Indian Hospital in Cherokee. The hospital serves approximately 14,000 members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). As an enrolled member of the EBCI, Cooper has been involved in American Indian health care for 25 years. He is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University and holds a master’s degree in business from UNC-Chapel Hill.

And instead, the board at Mission felt that HCA’s policy was actually going to cover patients better. And so they did make changes to that charity care policy to go with HCA’s policy instead. Here’s how Ron Winters, principal of Gibbins Advisors, talked about charity care at the virtual meeting: “It is difficult to qualify for charity care, and until you qualify, they have the right to ask you to pay a deposit and you don’t have the right to get it back,” said Winters.

Mission Health Monitor Promises Look at Physician Departures

email article As physicians quit Mission Health facilities in western North Carolina following the system s purchase by HCA Healthcare, an independent monitoring team said they were paying attention to the issue. The outside monitor Nashville-based consulting firm Gibbins Advisors was put in place as a result of stipulations the North Carolina attorney general made in greenlighting Mission Health s $1.5-billion sale to HCA in 2019. Team leaders held a 2-hour virtual meeting on Wednesday to address the issue for members of the public. Recently, many of the questions submitted to the independent monitor by members of the communities that Mission Health serves relate to physicians leaving local facilities, leaders at Gibbins said during the online webinar.
