Deep Dive: Did rural counties get left out of $1 25 billion New Hanover endowment deal?

NEW HANOVER COUNTY When $1.25 billion in public assets changes hands to a private group in New Hanover County as a result of the sale of the county-owned hospital, the intent of the transaction is that money will stay within county limits. Outside of an anticipated regulatory review, the deal is done. Still, some regional leaders in surrounding, rural counties are asking: Did we get left out of the deal? Related: The possibility the county took an overly insular approach to setting up the private benefactor of the public assets, New Hanover County Community Endowment, Inc., means residents that live outside the county line may not directly benefit from this aspect of the sale. As a county-owned hospital, there’s no doubt New Hanover County deserves the overwhelming bulk of sale proceeds.

Dogwood Health Trust announces new board members Staff Reports Dogwood Health Trust has announced the addition of three members to its Board of Directors. The board has confirmed Rear Admiral (ret.) Richard Houck (Transylvania County), Fred Jones (Macon County), and Bishop José McLoughlin (Henderson County), as new members. John Ball, M. D., J.D., rotated off the board, as his term ended in 2020.  “There is a wealth of talented leadership in Western North Carolina from which to select our directors, and these three are all great examples,” said Dogwood Health Trust Board Chair Janice Brumit. “Each of them brings a great deal of community knowledge, innovative thought, and demonstrated service to their roles, and we are delighted to welcome them to Dogwood’s board. We have no doubt that they will eagerly and effectively live into our purpose of dramatically improving the health and well-being of all people and communities in Western North Carolina.”

Henderson County News: Dogwood Health Trust reports $47 million in grants this year

“This past year was one that none of us could have foreseen, and like everyone else, Covid-19 certainly threw a wrench into our start-up year,” said Janice Brumit, chair, Dogwood Board of Directors. “However, we knew that supporting our partners across the region – large and small – would be critical. Like everyone else, we had to ‘pivot’ to respond and adjust to the pandemic, looking for opportunities to make positive changes along the way. The commitment and resiliency that we’ve seen in organizations throughout WNC is inspiring, and we are honored to play a part in their work. I’m proud of what the Dogwood team accomplished, of course, but even more proud of the work our partners have accomplished during this very challenging year.”
