One hundred years ago today on January 29, 1921 at Radcliffe College, Dr. Eva Beatrice Dykes successfully submitted her dissertation “Pope and His Influence in America from 1715-1850” to become the first Black woman to complete the requirements for a Ph.D. in the United States. The morning I first saw Dr. Dykes’ dissertation submission for her Doctor of Philosophy in English Philology degree, Harvard announced the closure of campus due to the rising Covid-19 pandemic. Minutes after receiving the email from University President Lawrence S. Bacow, I rushed to Schlesinger Library archives to spend as much time as I could with Dr. Dykes’ Radcliffe records.

The Lee County School Board received the same presentation during its recent briefing meeting. Approximately a year ago, the school district began working with Davis Demographics to ensure an equitable and diverse enrollment of students, as well as develop stronger schools through community partnerships and community-based school zones. The elementary school proximity zones also will provide a strategic improvement in transportation efficiency by reducing the time students are on the bus, officials said. The district put together a technical working group, headed by Project Manager Courtney Gordon. She said they had close to 50 attendees at the first meeting at Dunbar High School. There were also meetings at Cape Coral High School, Three Oaks Middle School and Varsity Lakes Middle School.

(LEX 18) — The Lexington United Volleyball Club community mourns after founder and director Chris Beerman lost his nearly month-long battle with COVID-19 over the weekend. Lexington United has about 230 current athletes who compete nationally. Chris Beerman and his wife Mary Beth started the club about a decade ago, coaching thousands of players—hundreds to the collegiate level. Monday afternoon at Lexington United practices, players received a sheet of paper that reads CB Play for him. Each player will get a piece of paper that they will write what they will do every time they enter the gym or compete in a match to honor Chris, Club Coach Jenni Morgan explained. Chris was a fierce competitor, and they will continue to play for him now and in the future.
