On the steps of Legislative Hall on a March afternoon, five school board candidates stood before a crowd calling for a complete reopening of Delaware public schools.
“We have a lot of radicals that are controlling our school boards,” said Lisa McCulley, a lead organizer of Stand Up Delaware. Since the start of the pandemic, the grassroots group had held rally after rally calling Gov. John Carney’s COVID-19 restrictions an infringement on individual liberties.
She pointed to Appoquinimink School District as an example, a school board with “one awesome conservative” overruled by “three women who control the whole board.”
