CHELMSFORD Spring Town Meeting will begin June 17, a measure that has sparked debate, including about the town moderator s powers and duties.
Town Moderator Jon Kurland announced his plans at a March 29 Select Board meeting.
Kurland said he will appear April 26 at the senior center with a witness to continue Town Meeting to June 17 at the Chelmsford High School gymnasium. Town Meeting normally begins the last Monday in April.
Safety, health factors
Kurland said his decision is based on coronavirus concerns, including allowing time for as many representatives as possible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Kurland said he has consulted with Health Director Sue Rosa, Town Manager Paul Cohen and Chelmsford Telemedia Director Pete Pedulla, as well as Superintendent of Schools Jay Lang regarding the gymnasium s availability.
Storm, with a fifth book on the way
Local author Jay Lang has published four (soon to be five) novels in a little over a year and is already working on her sixth. Lang, a UFV English and creative writing major, has developed a successful writing process that allows her to complete a book in as little as eight weeks.
Romantic thoughts of being a writer can be quickly eroded by the reality of how much work is required to complete manuscripts, build connections in the publishing world, and deal with potential rejection of your work.
Lang credits the successful publication of her books to a combination of a tenacious pursuit of knowledge about the publishing world, her work ethic, and the mentoring she received through directed studies at UFV with professor John Carroll. Writing and publishing one book seems like a daunting task, but to complete five in a year requires a substantial amount of effort and discipline on the part of the writer.

CHELMSFORD The school district has adopted a new response plan for identifying close contacts of coronavirus cases, but safety and communication concerns remain.
The School Committee voted unanimously on Feb. 16 to adopt the plan, with an eye toward notification of staff, allowing for school vacation.
The School Committee plans to finalize communications at its March 2 meeting.
New guidelines
Superintendent of Schools Jay Lang said under the new guidelines, a student or staff member who tests positive would still require notification of the entire school.
However, rather than requiring the entire class of that person to quarantine, the only ones required to quarantine would be those within 6 feet or less for 15 minutes or more in 24 hours.
