Randolph Rundown: Junior Sheriff s Academy, training programs, donations

Here s a look at this week s local happenings and announcements: Junior Sheriff s Academy From Monday, July 19 to July 23, the Randolph County Sheriff s Office will have its second week of the Junior Sheriff s Academy. Teenagers 13 to 15 interested in law enforcement, fire, and EMS were encouraged to register.  Captain Brian Arrington, head of the camp, said the program ran for a few years just for male students who were court-ordered. Then, under a new sheriff, the program was changed to a recruiting-style camp for teens interested in law enforcement. The department has continued the recruiting theme throughout the changes of the office.

Quick-thinking student saves child from drowning

Quick-thinking student saves child from drowning A day by the pool could have ended in tragedy, but the quick thinking of Randy Brown saved the day and saved a life. Brown, a 7th grade student at Flat Rock Middle, put his swim training to use to rescue a drowning toddler who had fallen into the deep end of a pool. Randy has been taking swimming lessons, and he has even done some lifeguard training, at The Swim Center in Stockbridge, and all of his preparation paid off in a priceless way. On Mother’s Day, his 2-year-old cousin fell into the deep end of the pool and no one noticed initially. The child’s mother saw him on the bottom of the pool and screamed. Randy leapt into action and dove in to get him.
