Randolph Rundown: Junior Sheriff's Academy, training programs, donations

Here s a look at this week s local happenings and announcements: Junior Sheriff s Academy From Monday, July 19 to July 23, the Randolph County Sheriff s Office will have its second week of the Junior Sheriff s Academy. Teenagers 13 to 15 interested in law enforcement, fire, and EMS were encouraged to register.  Captain Brian Arrington, head of the camp, said the program ran for a few years just for male students who were court-ordered. Then, under a new sheriff, the program was changed to a recruiting-style camp for teens interested in law enforcement. The department has continued the recruiting theme throughout the changes of the office.

New Juvenile Crime Prevention Council member aims to develop youth

The Courier-Tribune As a first-generation college student with no financial support, Jaylin Brower began selling marijuana as an answer to his money problems, a choice that would cost him his education at Western Carolina University after a felony conviction. Brower, 25, born in Ramseur, would describe himself as an at-risk unaccompanied homeless youth in his teenage years. Under the white painted ceilings of Eastern High School, Brower had multiple opportunities to excel as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track.  I was the varsity starter, all-county, and all-conference for two years in our district team, Brower said.  I was then given the opportunity after high school to play football at Western Carolina University.

Black Business Accelerator launching in Asheboro in March

Maybe you want to launch a global business.  Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.  Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.  Whatever it is, this customizable program will help you learn the basics of starting your own business and connect you with a network of successful owners and mentors.” These are the enticing words on the signup page of Asheboro’s soon-to-be-launched black business accelerator. The effort will be a collaboration between VentureAsheboro, Rotary International, and Small Business Center. “The idea stemmed from a conversation in our Midstate Rotary Group. I belong to a rotary group that, during the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement, we wanted to do something meaningful and people had a variety of ideas,” VentureAsheboro Founder and Rotary International member Jonathan Thill explains, “What we ended up landing on was trying to address the generational wealth gap through business ownership.”
