Mentors & Protégés Share
KUVO JAZZ has celebrated Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) in April for years, with a different musical “them e” each year. The 2021 theme is “Mentors and Protégés.”
Such a pair were the pianists Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, who together in the 1940’s staked out the playing field for their instrument in what was known as modern jazz. Jazz View, New York Times
Indeed, the art form of jazz (nay, the entire practice of music) depends on the ancient master-to-student conveyance of the disciplines, tips, tricks, theory, and attitude to truly learn the secret, coded language. (Many have been self-taught, but no artist gets very far without confronting the masters’ work in front of them.)

The Grammy Museum has launched a digital exhibit called
The exhibit, which premiered on April 2, is accompanied by an archived Q&A session with Blue Note president Don Was and Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard. It’s now available to watch on Collection:live, the Grammy Museum’s online streaming service.
Also part of the Grammy Museum’s programming for this month are archival performances by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Azar Lawrence, Christian McBride, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Cassandra Wilson. On April 8, it will feature new performances by pianist and composer Emmet Cohen and guitarist Julian Lage.
Jazz Mentor Bob Montgomery Share Mentoring is built into the craft of making music. While there are a few self-taught musicians that go on to fame and fortune, the great majority of working musicians studied under a “master.” And often, they go on to mentor others. Throughout April, KUVO marks Jazz Appreciation Month by playing the music of mentors and their protégés. Exhibit #1 in this effort is one of the most prolific jazz educators in Colorado, trumpeter Bob Montgomery.
“Go see and listen to as many working musicians as you can,” Montgomery tells his young charges. “Learn the language of music, the sounds, the rhythms, the feeling of music, so you can discover your own voice.”
April is Jazz Appreciation Month: our chance to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz music.
