Second edition on pan-India coastal defence exercise Sea Vigil 21 to be conducted today India Updated: Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 17:25 [IST] New Delhi, Jan 12: The second edition of the biennial pan-India coastal defence exercise Sea Vigil-21 will be conducted on 12-13 January 2021. The exercise, inaugural edition of which was conducted in January 2019; will be undertaken along the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and will involve all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities. The exercise is being coordinated by the Indian Navy. The entire coastal security set up was reorganised after the 26/11 Terror attack at Mumbai which was launched via the sea route.

Navy to hold mega defence exercise covering over 7,500 kms of coastline

The Indian Navy will kick-start on Tuesday a two-day multi-agency military exercise covering India s 7,516 km-long coastline, involving 13 coastal states and Union Territories, to further bolster maritime security and surveillance, officials said. Billed as India s largest coastal defence drill, the second edition of exercise Sea Vigil is being organised to check the efficacy of the measures initiated to plug gaps in coastal security following the Mumbai terror attack in 2008, they said. The scale and conceptual expanse of the exercise is unprecedented in terms of the geographical extent, the number of stakeholders involved, the number of units participating and in terms of the objectives to be met, the Indian Navy said.
