VERMILLION – South Dakota Women’s Basketball will spend this Thanksgiving in a tropical place.
USD will be part of the Paradise Jam November 25-27 at St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. “We’re really excited about the opportunity to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands and play in one of the premier events in women’s basketball,” USD coach Dawn Plitzuweit said in a statement. “This tournament has always been very strong and this year is certainly no exception as we will face three really tough opponents in a 72-hour time period.”
All five starters, including Sully Buttes alum Chloe Lamb, will be included in 13 returning players for the Coyotes, who won their second straight Summit League championship this past season.
To many who first walk into Sully Buttes High School, Mary Jo Stierâs is the first face they see. In addition to her role as administrative assistant, Mary Jo has a statewide leadership role as 1st Vice President at the American Legion Axillary. She also serves as the South Dakota Auxiliaryâs chairman of Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation (VA and R).
Mary Jo is the first from the area to seek statewide office since Mellitta Schultz in 1970-1971. She says she decided to seek statewide office because the auxiliary is âa great organization, so I decided I needed to either step up or get out.â
SIOUX FALLS – Coaches from Chamberlain, Mobridge-Pollock, Potter County, Faulkton Area and Sully Buttes have been recognized as Coaches of the Year by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.
Chamberlain’s Steve Schoenhard has been named as the Region 7 Assistant Boys Coach of the Year. Schoenhard is an assistant to Head Coach Andy Nelson. The Cubs were 18-6 and made the Class A state tournament for the first time in four years.
Trey Frederick of Mobridge-Pollock is the Region 4 Assistant Boys Coach of the Year. Frederick assists Head Coach TJ Knudson. The Tigers were 15-6 and made the SoDak 16.
Bryce Hall of Potter County was named as the Region 3 Boys Head Coach of the Year. Under Hall, the Battlers were 19-4 and qualified for the SoDak 16.
