Sorry, beer fans — the coronavirus pandemic could make your drinks flat Here s why

Sorry, beer fans the coronavirus pandemic could make your drinks flat. Here s why By Simone Jasper, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) © Dreamstime/Dreamstime/TNS The coronavirus pandemic is putting a strain on supplies used in carbonation, potentially endangering beer and soda supplies. The fizz added to your bubbly drinks is becoming harder to come by, sparking concerns about flat beer and soda. That’s because the coronavirus pandemic is putting a strain on supplies used in carbonation, experts say. Fizzy drinks require carbon dioxide, which is often captured during the production of ethanol for gasoline, Reuters reports. But the virus has lowered the demand for fuel, leading to closures at some ethanol plants, according to the news outlet.

What Caused the Pandemic SodaStream Canister Shortage

Reuters The pandemic forced retailers to cap the amount of SodaStream CO2 canisters shoppers could buy. Experts blamed high demand for sparkling water, a CO2 shortage, and a circular business model. The supply-chain clot was mostly resolved by March, when normal consumer behavior returned. In January, SodaStream owners who wandered into a Target in New York City s Tribeca neighborhood came face-to-face with the following sign: No more than two new canisters per customer. In an effort to combat shortages, the store was limiting the amount of CO2 canisters shoppers could buy for their at-home sparkling-water machines. Online, prospects were no better: Bed Bath & Beyond, a major national supplier of SodaStream, throttled sales in much the same way, constraining the number of canisters any single customer could buy.
