The land and buildings housing a fresh and smoked fish and seafood retail outlet – complete with what could be an owner-occupier’s residence at the rear – and located on one of New Zealand’s busiest provincial highways have been placed on the market for sale.
The property is located at 2288 State Highway Two in the Northern Waikato – which links Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula and the western reaches of the Bay of Plenty. New Zealand Transport Agency figures show that on an average weekday, some 11,692 vehicles travel along this stretch of the highway in both directions.

Unsolved: Jane Furlong.
A man tells police he saw Jane Furlong a day after her disappearance, being escorted through Port Waikato’s sand dunes by a group of men carrying a spade. On the anniversary of the unsolved murder, Kelly Dennett examines his story, and considers the fallibility of memory. The scene made him so uncomfortable, he says, that he documented it. Surreptitiously turned the flash off on his black Olympus camera, told his wife to pose, and hit snap. Where that photo is now is anyone’s guess, but if it still exists – and captures what he believes he saw – it could hold the key to one of New Zealand’s most infamous cold cases.
CHRISTEL YARDLEY/STUFF
The Red Fox Tavern case has been one of New Zealand s longest running police investigations, spanning 33 years. In March 2021, Waa sought leave to appeal his conviction for murder at the Court of Appeal, arguing the jury in his murder trial were misdirected by a jailhouse informant. He claimed the judge s directions concerning Witness A – a prisoner who gave evidence at his trial – were deficient. He claimed his trial should have been heard separately to his co-defendant Cullen, and said references Witness A made to another murder – that of Red Fox Tavern publican Chris Bush in 1987 – were highly prejudicial and inadmissible.
