Top Chef season, filmed in Portland, then you might feel like you already know Sara Hauman, one of the season’s current front-runners.
Hauman is head chef at the restaurant at Soter Vineyards, a winery in the Willamette Valley’s town of Carlton that serves ingredients grown at its on-site farm, and she calls Portland home. On
Top Chef, she’s endeared fans and fellow competitors with a zany, slightly self-deprecating sense of humor, and a cooking style that centers beautiful ingredients with deceptively simple techniques and flavors.

PORTLAND Sara Hauman didn’t set out to become “Top Chef’s” granola-crunching, yogurt-loving “weird girl from Portland.”
The 34-year-old, one of two chefs with local ties featured on the popular reality show’s first Portland season, says that yogurt just happened to be front-and-center in the “Top Chef” fridge whenever she needed dairy, which over the first sixepisodeswasoften. And, yes, in her day-to-day life, she does use yogurt as a replacement for sour cream or buttermilk, leaning on the ingredient to add some natural tang to a dish.

PORTLAND, Ore. A Portland company up has come up with a way to deal with those plastic to-go containers often called clamshells. They are no doubt a headache. You can t put them in curbside recycling and they seem to be almost everywhere these days.
They ve been widely used in these COVID times. Clamshell containers hold salads, berries, food-to-go. The problem? They can t go in our curbside recycling bins. In fact, right now, there are no curbside recycling programs anywhere in Oregon that will take plastic clamshells.

This season, “Top Chef” has stood out not only because it features cooks working with food and ingredients from Portland and beyond. Season 18 of the Bravo series was also filmed during the pandemic, which meant the competing chefs observed safety measures, and guest judges consisted of a rotating panel of “Top Chef” all-stars.
