For a historian of Britain like myself, this question calls to mind the work of EP Thompson, who read the history of the English working class with one eye on the Romantic poets who sensitively captured the social and cultural transformations of the revolutionary late 18th century.

Veteran actress Khursheed Shahid passes away

LAHORE: Legendary television and stage actor Begum Khursheed Shahid died peacefully in her sleep early morning in Lahore. She was over 95.
Her son, well known actor Salman Shahid, and his wife Tahira Ali, were by her side. She enjoyed music till her last days, even when she could not speak much. She also leaves behind her only grandchild Maha, daughter of Salman Shahid and journalist Beena Sarwar.
Awarded the Pride of Performance late in her career at a time when it held no meaning for her, she was renowned for her no-nonsense character, powerful, sensitive stage and television portrayals and for her professionalism. She was also an accomplished singer and tanpura player who famously accompanied the great classical singer Roshan Ara Begum.

On 30th April a year ago, Rishi Kapoor left this world after a long battle with leukaemia, leaving behind an amazing body of work for which he will be remembered for ages. Rishi, or Chintu, as he was fondly called, was supposed to feature alongside Deepika Padukone in the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film The Intern. Amitabh Bachchan recently replaced him in the film. His last release before his death was Jeetu Joseph s 2019 thriller film The Body , co-starring Emraan Hashmi. It met with mixed responses.

A few days back Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) announced results and most of the students who had written their examinations emerged successful with flying colours. They got distinctions – even many more got 500 out of 500. Literally speaking, it needs burning of midnight oil to score 470 or above. Verily, it is not everyone’s cup of tea, all it needs dedication, hard work and consistency.
