Actress Begum Khursheed dies aged 95

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) pioneering actress, entertainer and radio moderator Begum Khursheed Shahid passed away in Lahore on Sunday at the age of 95 years.
Her son, Salman Shahid, confirmed her death. Sharing details about the sad news, Salman said she was put on a ventilator after suffering a cardiac arrest and had been in hospital for some time.
One of Pakistan’s legendary actresses, Begum Khursheed started her career from All India Radio in Delhi both as an artist and an entertainer. She relocated to Pakistan in 1947 and became a significant part in the performance circles of Lahore. She joined PTV in 1964 and acted in probably the best plays created by PTV in the next 20 years.

LAHORE: Legendary television and stage actor Begum Khursheed Shahid died peacefully in her sleep early morning in Lahore. She was over 95.
Her son, well known actor Salman Shahid, and his wife Tahira Ali, were by her side. She enjoyed music till her last days, even when she could not speak much. She also leaves behind her only grandchild Maha, daughter of Salman Shahid and journalist Beena Sarwar.
Awarded the Pride of Performance late in her career at a time when it held no meaning for her, she was renowned for her no-nonsense character, powerful, sensitive stage and television portrayals and for her professionalism. She was also an accomplished singer and tanpura player who famously accompanied the great classical singer Roshan Ara Begum.

Legendary Pakistani film and TV star Begum Khursheed Shahid died after a prolonged illness at the age of 95 in Lahore on Sunday.
Salman Shahid, Khursheed’s son, confirmed the news of her passing and told the media his mother had been on a ventilator since she suffered a cardiac arrest a couple of days ago, The Express Tribune reported.
She was born in 1926 and started her acting as well as singing career at the age of nine.
Begum Khursheed Shahid received the country s highest civilian award, the Pride of Performance, in 1984.
