Teachers getting vaccinated at Colorado Springs’ first drive-thru clinic
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) Local leaders will visit the city’s first “drive-up” vaccine clinic on Thursday afternoon.
Centura Health plans to give 5,000 vaccines over the three-day clinic to eligible pre-registered patients. Thursday’s short session (1 pm-6 pm) will be the pilot for the full-day sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Centura expects patients on Thursday to be primarily educators.
One educator, Madelyn Watson, who is a substitute teacher with D3 will be getting the vaccine at Thursday s clinic at the Broadmoor World Arena. Getting educators vaccinated is providing some relief, in an effort to avoid a substitute shortage that schools experienced months ago during the peak of the pandemic.
Parents and Education groups hoping to get standardized testing waived, again
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) The Colorado Education Association and The Colorado Springs Education Association, an organization representing 1,500 public school educators in Colorado Springs School District 11, is asking the state to postpone state testing this year in Colorado.
The Colorado Measures of Academic Success is the exam every spring that tracks students proficiency in math, science, English, social studies, and arts.
Aside from the stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic, many educators believe they should use the testing time to instruct their students and focus on their mental health.
District 11 to launch new online school option in Fall 2021
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) Despite early challenges associated with transitioning to at-home learning amid the pandemic, District 11 is making changes based on an increased demand. When we look at our data over the past ten years or so, we ve seen an increase in demand for online learning, Julie Johnson said.
The district is launching a complete online school option, called Spark Online Academy, for K-8 students beginning in August 2021.
Johnson, newly appointed principal for the school, said while the pandemic created several challenges in the last year, it also provided an opportunity for more flexible alternatives.
Colorado Springs School District 11 has notified all staff members at Mitchell High School that they will be released from their current work assignments at the end of this school year. They will have to reapply if they wish to continue working at Mitchell High School for the 2021-2022 academic year.
The move comes after years of Mitchell High Schoolâs status as a priority improvement school, according to state and district standards. The decision was reached after conversations between the District 11 Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Education.
According to data provided by the CDE, Mitchell High Schoolâs students did not meet Colorado Measures of Academic Success or Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test state achievement standards â the standardized tests used to measure student achievement â and scored in the lowest 5 percent on Coloradoâs school performance framework.
