As we recognize Black History Month across our community and our nation, thanks to Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black History week, a precursor to Black History Month, I would like to call your attention to two ladies and a few black men of the old West who are a bit obscure in U.S. history.
The first being Pvt. Cathay Williams, who joined the Army for a three year enlistment as a man, in 1867 as Pvt. William Cathay. It was a time when all women were prohibited from joining the military. While the records are unclear, apparently, the Army was such need or haste for soldiers to support the expanding west of the Mississippi River post civil war, a normal military physical was over looked. Pvt. Cathay Williams was a large woman, 5 feet, 8 inches and weighing about 160, short hair and very physically fit in appearance.

COLORADO SPRINGS â With schools having e-learning options now, snow days are looking a bit different for many kids.
Many students in School Districts 11, 20 and 49 were told theyâd still need to attend class virtually Tuesday.
Despite that, News 5 still found dozens of kids at Cottonwood Creek Park Tuesday with their sleds, trash can lids, inner tubes, even snowboards making the most of the snowy weather.
âWell itâs a snow day⦠itâs snowing a lot,â middle school student Greyson Wise said. âAnd why not sled?

Pikes Peak Library District and Harrison School District 2 have partnered to provide all D-2 students with PowerPass, a digital PPLD library card.
âThe PowerPass grants access to PPLDâs digital resources, like databases, eBooks, and song and movie downloads, all available at ppld.org. Each PowerPass holder can also check out five physical items at a time from any of the 15 PPLD locations or mobile library services,â said a joint news release about the partnership.Â
D-2 will be the second local school district to offer PowerPass to its students; Colorado Springs School District 11 was the first.Â
The release notes that some educational challenges posed by COVID-19 may be mitigated by increased access to digital resources.
