Local community group Lend a Hand s Easter campaign saw them visit dozens of disadvantaged families around the Horwich area on Saturday. The Easter Eggs were donated by Tesco Extra Middlebrook and were delivered by group volunteers Sarah Martin and Alan Straughton, who donned an Easter bunny costume for the occasion. Denise Silcock founded Lend a Hand in Horwich last year, in a bid to help those struggling in the community. The group, which has amassed an army of local volunteers recruited through leaflets and social media, has helped locals with shopping, picking up prescriptions, walking dogs and other odd jobs.

DIFFERENCE:Denise Silcock with the award for a being Horwich champion IF the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that the little things really do matter. Realising this early on during the coronavirus outbreak, Denise Silcock set up Lend a Hand Horwich ­ It’s the Little Things! She said: “Like many when coronavirus hit I really wanted to do my bit. “For me Covid-19 was far more than a virus, it could be totally life changing as my husband suffers from a very serious lung condition. Due to the health risks and being his full time carer we both went in to ‘shielded’ isolation.

LEND a Hand in Horwich’s amazing volunteers give up their time for free to shop, collect prescriptions and organise transport for hospital appointments, exercising dogs and much more. They have also supported the elderly and the homeless organising essential parcels for them ­ and receives referrals from established organisations. The organisation also helps people’s wellbeing through organising baking clubs, knitting clubs, online activities for the community, families and children and now there are plans to set up a wellbeing group. Volunteer Sarah Martin said: “I joined the Lend A Hand Horwich Facebook group in April 2020 as a way of supporting my community during lockdown. I started by volunteering to walk a dog twice a week for a lady, and what an absolute joy that has been.So much so that I’m still doing it and I am looking to get a rescue dog of my own.
