Cape Coral Schools installing more flashing signs for student traffic safety

Cape Coral Schools installing more flashing signs for student traffic safety Published: May 19, 2021 5:08 AM EDT Updated: May 19, 2021 7:46 AM EDT Recommended To try keeping our children safe as they head off to school, Cape Coral will approve new signs with flashing, attention-grabbing lights to go in school zones. The Cape Coral Police Department says it has issued an average of 50 tickets in school zones per year since 2017, and a lot of warnings, too. Will more of these signs make school zones safer? The City of Cape Coral shows 20 of their schools are not up to standards when it comes to signage in school zones. This includes a speed limit sign with flashing lights as well as a school crossing sign. CCPD says, in many cases, drivers are not paying attention or they are in a rush; both are unacceptable.

Lakeland commissioners appear to favor police body cameras, will explore cost to purchase

LAKELAND  Lakeland officials have all but indicated they would be in favor purchasing all new body and in-vehicle dashboard cameras for the Lakeland Police Department.  The commissioners decision to move a step closer to purchasing cameras was undoubtedly influenced by the positive experiences shared by Chief Jeff O Dell, of Kissimmee Police Department, and Lt. Allan Kolak, of Cape Coral Police Department during a meeting last week. Anytime [officers] are out in public we want body cameras on, Odell said at the meeting, which was held Friday morning. Part of selling it was highlighting positive interactions.   The Kissimmee Police Department will share videos of its officers stopping to help community members - like fixing a child s bike - on social media, according to Odell.

Lee County NAACP hopes to educate law enforcement, avert tragedies

We want our law enforcement to protect and serve everybody,  Lee County NAACP Political Action Committee Co-Chair Fredrick Dunbar Morgan II said. Chiefs and a deputy chief from Punta Gorda Police Department, Charlotte County Sheriff s Office, Cape Coral Police Department and Sanibel Police Department attended a recent seminar. The plan was to act out the scenarios outside in the parking lot of the NAACP office, but due to the heat, they opted to sit inside and have an open discussion. Lee County NAACP President and Regional Director James Muwakkil, Morgan and Sparrow spoke with the agencies about different scenarios involving Black drivers being pulled over.
