Heartache and hope: Sergeant Chetty and Ghostâs mission not for the fainthearted

Durban - As a seasoned search and rescue operative, Sergeant Devendran (Collin) Chetty and his canine partner, âGhostâ, have grown accustomed to searching for missing people.
But when Chetty and Ghost stumbled upon nine-year-old Miguel Louwâs corpse on September 3, 2018, the find hit home hard.
Until the discovery, Chetty, like many others, was aware of Louwâs disappearance on July 17, 2018 and clung to the hope of a fairytale ending for the boy and his family.
Instead, he and Ghost found the Sydenham youngster lying lifeless on his back with his jacket and shirt pulled over his face, in a bushy area off Longbury Drive, Phoenix, north of Durban.

A court has sentenced the killer of Miguel Louw nearly three years after the nine-year-old boy went missing.
Mohamed Ebrahim Vahed was handed 34 years in jail for the murder and kidnapping of the Durban boy.
He went missing in July 2018 and was last seen in Vahed s company before his badly decomposed body was found two months later.
The High Court in Durban sentenced a man to 34 years in jail on Wednesday for the murder and kidnapping of nine-year-old Miguel Louw.
Mohamed Ebrahim Vahed, 43, from Phoenix was sentenced to 34 years and six months imprisonment after he was convicted in July 2018.

DURBAN: The family of Miguel Louw has welcomed the jail sentence handed to his killer, in the Durban High Court, on Wednesday morning.
His aunt Tasneem Dos Santos told IOL that they were really pleased with the outcome and that justice has been served.
“Even though it has been bitter-sweet and we will never get our baby back, we are pleased that the monster is behind bars.”
Durban High Court Judge Jacqueline Henriques jailed Mohammed Vahed Ebrahim, 46, sentencing him to 25 years for the premeditated murder of Miguel Louw.

Murder Latest: Miguel Louw killer sentenced to 34 years in jail
Mohamed Vahed, 43, who was found guilty of the kidnapping and murder of Miguel Louw was sentenced in the Durban High Court on Wednesday.
Phoenix man, Mohamed Ebrahim Vahed, 43, was sentenced to 34 years and six months imprisonment in the Durban High Court on Wednesday.
This is after he was convicted for the murder and kidnapping of nine-year-old, Miguel Louw, in July 2018.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman, Natasha Kara, said Vahed had also been found guilty of theft and was sentenced to 25 years, eight years and 18 months for the three offences.
Vahed had occasionally stayed with Miguel and his family in Sydenham because he sometimes did odd jobs for them. Sometime prior to the boy’s disappearance, Vahed had told Miguel’s mother, Raylene that he was attracted to her. She turned down his advances, and he became angry and warned that he would “show her”.

Durban - Raylene Louw, the mother of Miguel Louw who was murdered in 2018, said she wishes that no other parent would have to endure what she went through.
Her victim impact statement was handed to court as part of the sentencing proceedings for Miguelâs killer, Mohammed Vahed Ebrahim, who was found guilty of the 2018 kidnapping and premeditated murder in December 2020, by Durban High Court Judge Jacqueline Henriques.
In her statement, Louw said the lack of remorse by Ebrahim was disturbing. She said that no words could explain the ordeal they endured after Ebrahim took Miguel and lied about knowing where he was.
