CANTON – Travel a few miles in any direction and you re bound to pass a store with dollar in its name.
Dollar General and Family Dollar each have five stores in Canton, and Dollar Tree has four stores within the city limits. City Council recently approved a replat for the future site of a sixth Dollar General, but it also prompted members to question the apparent glut of dollar stores. When you stand at the site where this proposed Dollar General s going in, you can actually see the sign of another dollar store, Councilman John Mariol II, D-7, said.
He begrudgingly voted in favor of the change on April 5, citing the council s inability to legally deny the development and his fear that an oversaturated market will lead to vacant buildings. Mariol and Councilman Greg Hawk, D-1 who cast a protest vote in opposition to the replat said they want to consider their options to limit new dollar stores.
Supreme Court rules against Plain Township in public records case
PLAIN TWP. – The Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that invoices for Plain Township s legal services are public records, regardless of whom keeps the records.
The township was ordered to hand over invoices for its legal services, pay $1,000 in statutory damages and pay court fees to Steven Armatas. He initially requested invoices in December 2018 related to legal matters involving himself and the township, according to the court s opinion.
The township administrator acknowledged Armatas request but for a period of many months, Armatas received neither access to the records nor a written denial of his request, according to the court.
CANTON – Stark County commissioners are expected on Wednesday to adopt an Emergency Rental Assistance Program to provide housing stability and prevent evictions.
Through the federally-funded program, county residents would be eligible to receive up to 12 months of overdue rent payments if the pandemic affected their ability to pay.
Payments for unpaid rent bills after March 13, 2020, and up to $50 a month in late fees would be made directly to landlords.
Susan Lenigar, deputy director of the Human Services Division at the Stark County Department of Job and Family Services, presented the rental assistance plan to commissioners at Tuesday s work session.
SCJFS would administer the program with $11 million in COVID-19 relief funds from the U.S. Treasury Department.
CANTON – Some big changes are coming to the downtown dining scene.
A new restaurant is opening. A longtime eatery is relocating. And two other local favorites are reopening under new management.
Jerzee s Cafe in Centennial Plaza should open by the end of this month.
Owner Chris Maggiore said he s planning a soft opening before the NFL Draft begins April 29. All that remains are some final touches to the cafe s appearance, technology and staffing. We want to open and do it right, Maggiore said.
The restaurant at 330 Court Ave. NW will have a scaled-down Jerzee s All American Sports Grille menu: burgers, wraps, salads, boxed lunches, pizzas and flatbreads. It also will feature Starbucks coffee and tea beverages and a small selection from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
