Brookhaven, Latin American Association opens new food pantry for struggling families

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. - Those in Brookhaven struggling to meet needs during the pandemic will get a boost on Friday with the opening of a new community food pantry.
The city of Brookhaven teamed with the Latin American Association in the new endeavor created to assist those living along the Buford Highway corridor and the greater community. Brookhaven pitched in a $25,000 grant for the LAA to renovate and open the location. We’ve seen since the start of the pandemic that many families are experiencing food insecurity, and it continues into 2021, said Santiago Marquez, CEO of the LAA. With the new food pantry, we are able to have a larger food capacity and provide more families with food.

Through Dec. 31, 2020, the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando held a Human Services Relief Matching campaign, sponsored by the Jewish Federations of North America. The Federation raised $62K, which JFNA matched with $31K (50 percent matching gift), equaling a total of $93K for our community.
JFNA saw the need to create the Human Services Relief Matching Fund because of the economic crises - approximately 1.2 million Jewish adults felt the financial crunch that affected housing costs, and food security.
Federation Executive Director Keith Dvorchik contacted Jewish Family Services of Orlando, Central Florida Hillel, the Jewish Pavilion, Kinneret Council on Aging, and the Rosen JCC and Roth Family JCC to discuss their COVID-related needs. Dvorchik discovered that that through October 2020, JFS Orlando had a significant increase in several areas, including

The Pearlman Emergency Food Pantry provided enough food for more than 175,000 meals to about 9,000 individuals

JFS Orlando’s mental health counselors transitioned all appointments to telehealth (overnight with very few hiccups) to stay safe and still meet with clients.

The Family Stabilization program helped more than 140 families fight homelessness and become more self-sufficient for the long term.
