Chimney fire damages Colebrookdale Township house

Repairs underway at hole above abandoned mine shaft in Washington Township

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has begun emergency repairs at the deep hole that opened Nov. 15 at a 19th century abandoned iron ore mine along Old Route 100 in Washington Township. DEP agents with the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation have cleared trees and plan to begin filling in the hole next week, said Colleen Connolly, DEP spokeswoman. The bureau oversees hazards resulting from mining operations. - Advertisement - Connolly said the work will take several days to several weeks to complete. A cost estimate was unavailable. The hole, initially about 25 feet wide, has grown several feet wider on the side closest to Old Route 100, said David D. Moyer, chairman of the township supervisors.

Driver injured when trash truck crashes into building in Bechtelsville

A trash truck barreled through a stop sign while coming down a hill in Bechtelsville before dawn Monday, then traveling through a yard and crashing into a wooden shed, injuring the driver, Eastern Berks Regional police said. The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. at East Main and Franklin streets. Traffic was diverted off East Main Street for about five hours until a crew from Berks-Mont Towing could remove the truck. Eastern Berks police said the Whitetail Disposal Inc. truck driven by Shaun Campbell, 35, address unavailable, was  eastbound on Franklin, police said. The truck didn’t stop at the intersection with East Main and continued across that street into a yard before slamming into the shed, demolishing it, police said.

Crews make quick work of apartment, breezeway fire in Colebrookdale Township

Boyertown Area Fire & Rescue crews made quick work of an apartment fire Thursday in Colebrookdale Township. The first crew responded about 9:20 p.m. to the fire at 133 Sawmill Road. Eastern Berks Regional police were already there when firefighters arrived, said G. Jeffrey Bealer, public information officer. The fire was in a self-standing apartment separated from the main residence by a breezeway. Crews quickly put out most of the flames and worked to contain the fire. - Advertisement - No one was injured. The fire is under investigation by the township fire marshal, but there are indications it started due to a malfunctioning kerosene heater in the apartment, Bealer said.
