Clemson Tied for Second after First Round of Collegiate Invitational at Country Club of Birmingham
Clemson, S.C. Jacob Bridgeman fired a three-under-par 68 on Monday to lead fourth-ranked Clemson to a 291 team score and a tie for second place with Tennessee after the first round of the Collegiate Invitational @ Country Club of Birmingham. The 14-team tournament that includes seven of the top 25 teams in the nation, will run through Wednesday with the teams playing 18 holes per day.
One of the top regular-season tournaments of the season, the field includes nine SEC teams, the first time this year Clemson has played in a tournament against SEC teams. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, but a tornado did considerable damage to the course and knocked down over 1,500 trees.
Clemson also received strong performances from freshman middle blocker Colleen Finney and sophomore setter Mckenna Slavik. Finney registered a season-high seven blocks, including three solos, along with nine kills. Slavik dished out a match-high 38 assists and dug 16 Hokie attacks, just one dig shy of her career best.
With the win, Clemson concluded its 2020 season with an overall record of 12-10 and was 6-10 in ACC matchups. Virginia Tech (6-11, 5-11 ACC) also closed out its season on Saturday.
Both teams were knotted at 12-12 in the opening set, but Clemson outscored the Hokies 13-7 in the final 20 plays of the set to win it, 25-19. Hannah posted five of her 20 total kills in game No. 1 on just six swings with no errors. Finney and Thomas also added four kills each. Set No. 1 saw plenty of fluid offense as Clemson hit .538, while the Hokies hit .345.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. A pair of No. 8 all-time performances from Harleigh White and Danielle Sloley in the women’s triple jump and shot put, respectively, proved to be the highlights of Saturday’s action for the Clemson track and field program as the 2021 Florida Relays concluded this afternoon. In total, the Tigers had six top-five finishes during the final day of competition, including one event victory courtesy of Roje Stona in the men’s discus.
“[This weekend] gave our kids a good idea of what they can expect at the end of the season,” said Clemson’s Director of Track & Field, Mark Elliott. “There were a lot of teams at the meet that are ranked high nationally, and they are the competition we want to test ourselves against. I was excited that we got to do that.”
