Sheikhupura is famous for its quality rice and historical places. The city itself was founded by Moghul Emperor Jahangir more than four centuries ago in 1607, and made district headquarters exactly a century ago (in 1922), Named then as Jahangirpura, with the status of a royal hunting ground, it was later renamed as Sheikhupura after Emperor Jahangir’s nickname ‘Sheikhu’ given to him by his mother. The district houses some historically significant sites including Sheikhupura Fort, Hiran Minar, mausoleum of Waris Shah at Jandiala Sher Khan, and the National Marian Shrine visited by Christians each year. Until 2005, Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of the founder of Sikh religion Baba Guru Nanak, was also part of it before it was made a separate district.

LG minister applauds public private partnership in uplift of merged districts July 8, 2021 KALAYA: Provincial Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, Elections and Parliamentary Affairs Akbar Ayub Khan on Wednesday applauded the role of public-private partnership in the development of merged districts. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a causeway bridge at Kasha in Upper Orakzai, which was constructed by Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) under the auspices of its European Union (EU)-funded and KFW-financed “Aid to Uprooted People in Pakistan” project. The mega project of Kasha Causeway was launched on December 30, 2019 at a cost of Rs44.5 million with an objective to ease the inhabitant’s access to the market, educational institutes and health facilities.

IGP helps victim cop with cash July 7, 2021 PESHAWAR: KP Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari on Tuesday handed over a cheque for Rs50,000 as financial aid to Sub-Inspector Khalid Khan who has fallen victim to online fraud. An official statement said his bank account was hacked by some unknown persons who had withdrawn all the amount from the account. The affected cop had appealed to the IGP for financial assistance who called the affected official to his office and handed him the cheque. The police chief assured him that the accused involved in the crime would be arrested with the help of the Federal Investigation Agency Cybercrime Wing.

PU’s Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar inaugurated a blood donation camp at the department. DSW Chairperson Prof Dr Syed Mehnaz Hassan, Registrar Dr Khalid Khan, faculty members and a large number of students participated in the event.

E-WASTE HAZARDS: This refers to the report ‘E-waste poses health threat to Pakistanis, says UN study’ (June 16). This is an alarming situation and calls for immediate pre-emptive and remedial steps. Karachi is the major location for e-waste recycling and dismantling. China and India have been working effectively to reduce this threat. Pakistan needs to boost its efforts and constitute a regulatory body to counter the e-waste hazard. Aleem Quraishi Karachi WATERBORNE DISEASES: The burden of waterborne diseases is increasing in Pakistan, but the expenditure on health is limited due to inadequate allocations. The government of Punjab has undertaken two initiatives to ensure safe drinking water, but it is yet to be seen how these initiatives will contribute to improving the supply of safe drinking water across the province.
