MASTER GARDENERS: Go for the early season greens

I wrote this article looking out the window at five inches of fresh snow and asking “what do I tell people to grow this early?” The answer to early season gardening is: “grow greens!” There is a wide range of these plants that appeal to many palates and are generally easy to grow.
Many greens can be planted as soon as the soil can be worked, long before other vegetables can go in the ground. We start even earlier by starting several lettuces, spinach and radicchios in trays or plastic rain gutters I use for starting.

One Vegetable One Community strives to unite the community by encouraging gardeners of all levels to plant, grow, cook, and/or share a single vegetable. The aim is to see the vegetable of the year growing in kitchen gardens, community and school gardens, containers on front porches, in front of businesses, faith-based organizations, and government buildings. Through sharing growing, preparing, cooking and storing information, One Vegetable One Community starts a conversation in the community about food, nutrition and how Crow Wing County can support healthier choices.
Crow Wing Energized: Grants available to support healthy choices
Up to $500 will be awarded for Workplace Wellness Grants and up to $2,000 for the Healthy Community Grant.

Crow Wing Energized has opened two grants to support efforts to make the healthy choice is the easy choice.
Grant applications to improve health and wellness in our community by making the healthy choices, the easy choice are currently open. The deadline for both grants is March 1, with an award date of April 1.
Organization criteria for applying includes serving or located within Crow Wing County, including but not limited to: neighborhood, youth, or environmental groups; faith-based organizations; health care organizations; civic or citizens associations; economic development agencies; local government entities; local businesses; school districts and other similar groups.
