SMITHFIELD – Gallagher Middle School has been designated as a “No Place for Hate” school this year by the Anti-Defamation League for its actions and work focused on equity, said Vice Principal John Burns.
Since last summer, the school has focused on taking the next step toward the No Hate initiative as a whole school, including creating a coalition of students, family and faculty to run activities.
Gallagher hosted numerous activities throughout the year based on inclusion, bias and equity, teaching students procedures and processes through school-wide activities.
The Anti-Defamation League identified Gallagher along with other schools nationwide as a banner “No Place for Hate” school in recognition of its work over the last year.
SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield School Committee is looking to create a capital improvement fund for maintaining and improving school buildings, a move Supt. Judy Paolucci said would lessen the need to borrow bond funds in the future.
During a School Committee meeting on Monday, April 26, Paolucci gave an example of a three-part investment plan that would allow the department to consistently grow a capital improvement fund while spending money on capital projects. The town, she said, would need to be on board for the plan to work.
Paolucci said the district could first invest a portion, 3.5 percent for example, of the fund balance from the operating budget.
