“We were excited to work on a project that would improve the lives of the residents.” Kardynal said she was eager to be involved. “When Tonia had approached me to join her on a mural project at the Yorkton and District Nursing home I was excited to simply have an opportunity to pick up a paint brush and create,” she said. “Little did I know at that time the exact impact of the project I was embarking on. The door disguise mural project that Umair Kharral has spearheaded at the Nursing home has such an important function in enhancing the quality of life for the residents.
The grounds of the 1892 Public School Building at the corner of Whiteoak and Normal in Kutztown hosted artists and visitors to the Kutztown Area Historical Societyâs first springtime Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, May 22.
âWe had to cancel the societyâs holiday festival last November, so we wanted to do something to help the artists who usually attend. And we wanted to do something to help bring Kutztown out of the pandemic doldrums. So we decided to have an outdoor arts and crafts festival,â said event organizer Kerri Shegan. âMay weather can be tricky, but we lucked out with a beautiful day.â

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Karen DeLong, associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA), was recently presented with the Emerging Scholar Award by the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA). The award is presented to high-performing, early-career professionals with demonstrated research and resulting publication activity.
DeLong received the award in February at the annual SAEA meeting, which was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The sign at the 1892 building reads: The Public School Building from 1892 is one of the best examples of Victorian school architecture that is still remaining in the Northeast United States. It cost $17,600 to build, with money that was given by people from the region, and was used until 1977. On the 23rd of February in the year 1979, the Kutztown Area Historical Society purchased the school to establish a museum dedicated to the history of the East Penn Valley. In July of 1980, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
