School considering roof project, bus purchases

Sturgis Journal Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education on Monday examined and discussed several agenda items for its next board meeting, scheduled for April 19. Board members received a request for proposals report from Ray Sterling, the district s director of finance. The district is interested in purchasing two new gas-powered buses, as part of a fleet-replacement plan. Each bus will be identical, Sterling said: a 77-passenger, Blue Bird unit. Cost is about $93,000 each. The board will take action at the April 19 meeting. Sterling also discussed a request for proposals for placing a new roof over the Sturgis High School cafeteria. Division 7 Building Contractors of Kalamazoo submitted a complete bid that came within 5% of the estimated cost of the project.

Sturgis Journal Sturgis Public Schools will offer an “academic summer camp” for students entering first through ninth grade during the 2021-22 school year.  The camp is intended to help students who require extra assistance in learning, particularly gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and shifted learning experiences. Students will be selected for the academic camp based on academic criteria, teacher recommendation and federal guidelines attached to the funds being made available for the program, district officials said Monday.  Additionally, high school summer school for credit recovery aimed at current high school students will be expanded, with the assistance of federal CARES Act funds.
