Lexington City Councilman Joe Watkins decided to walk his talk this year when he moved his formerly home-based information technology business to uptown Lexington.
As a long-time proponent and encourager for business owners to move into downtown, especially minority-owned businesses, Watkins moved into his new location at 17 East First Avenue in January. You got to walk the talk you are speaking, he said. I can t be an advocate for bringing minority businesses here if I am not here.

The Lexington City Council voted to hire a full-time employee dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion of city staff during its meeting on Monday.
The 4-3 vote came after Lexington City Manager Terra Greene presented her proposal that the city hire an independent consultant, assessed by a diversity and inclusion team made of city employees, to provide professional recommendations for a strategic direction. She said this would include determining what a DEI professional job description would be; the salary that would need to be budgeted, an organizational assessment and what staff resources may be needed. The proposed consultant would have begun in February.
