Community celebrates upgrades at Edward C Smith Civic Center in Lexington

The Edward C. Smith Civic Center is back with a new look and a new space. On Friday, members of the community and local leaders joined to unveil the Turlington annex to the civic center as well as a new entrance, new bathrooms, and a new kitchen. The new additions were made possible by the donation of a building by Mike Turlington and his family. The two-story, 8,260-square-foot property is located next door to the civic center and shares two common walls. The City of Lexington owns the civic center. If you want it to happen, do it Lexington City Councilman Joe Watkins decided to walk his talk this year when he moved his formerly home-based information technology business to uptown Lexington. As a long-time proponent and encourager for business owners to move into downtown, especially minority-owned businesses, Watkins moved into his new location at 17 East First Avenue in January. You got to walk the talk you are speaking, he said. I can t be an advocate for bringing minority businesses here if I am not here.
