Former Oklahoma prisons boss picked for county jail trust Associated Press 2 hrs ago OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The former head of Oklahoma’s prison system was appointed Monday to the Oklahoma County Jail Trust. The Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners announced Joe Allbaugh would fill a vacancy on the nine-member panel, which was created last year to oversee a jail long plagued with overcrowding, inmate deaths, escapes and crumbling infrastructure. Allbaugh served as director of the Department of Corrections from 2016 until he abruptly resigned in 2019. He previously worked as chief of staff for then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush and later as director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Bush was elected president.

Updated: 12:08 PM CDT May 17, 2021 KOCO Staff Joe Allbaugh, former director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, has been appointed to fill the vacant seat on the Oklahoma County Jail Trust, officials announced Monday morning.According to a news release from the Oklahoma County Detention Center, during Monday’s Oklahoma County Commissioners meeting, members filled a seat on the Oklahoma County Jail Trust left vacant by the recent resignation of Tricia Everest. Everest resigned her seat last month after Gov. Kevin Stitt appointed her Secretary of Public Safety.In a two-to-one vote, commissioners appointed Allbaugh to the nine-member board. From 2016-2019, Allbaugh led the Oklahoma Department of Corrections through several issues, including an inmate population explosion, a staffing shortage and a crumbling prison infrastructure.As director, officials said Allbaugh convinced state legislative leaders to invest more than $116 million into the department�

Now being locked up in the Oklahoma County Jail can open up a path to a better life. The Diversion Hub was set up as a free service to help people weave their way through the complicated court system. However, in the past two years, the agency has become much more than that. The agency is a clearing house of opportunity, serving so many in our community who are desperate to find a foothold. Nearly all the Diversion Hub’s clients are low income and some are indigenous. Alcohol and drug addiction are common. Some are homeless and, for many, hunger is a way of life, so imagine how difficult it might be for them to pay a fine, find transportation to a court date or comply with probation requirements.
