Many come to Eagle County in the hopes of feeling more connected to nature, but the joys of this closeness are juxtaposed with a heightened exposure to nature’s wrath. That was certainly the case on the afternoon of July 22 when a mudslide, suddenly and without warning, swept through Avon.
Residents in the town’s two most heavily impacted housing complexes the Sonnen Halde and Beaver Bench condominiums said they did not know where to turn as mud and debris filled their homes. Some of those residents were left with a feeling of dread at the sight of rain clouds.

The Thursday afternoon mudslide in Avon meant traffic delays for many, but for some residents it has meant displacement and extensive damage that, in many cases, will be a cost shouldered by them and them alone.
For the residents of two housing complexes Beaver Bench in Nottingham Park and the Sonnen Halde condominiums on Nottingham Road Thursday’s mudslide was a horror they were completely unprepared for, one local said Friday.
“My main fear is that something could happen again before we have a chance to clean up and assess the damage from the first time, and make sure that we can do any permanent changes to avoid this happening in the future,” said Jennifer Lance, a resident of Sonnen Halde. “We’re definitely worried that it could get worse before we have a chance to make it better.”

After a challenging year, the Avon Recreation Center is free of its restrictions and ready to return to business as usual. But even with the restrictions and mandates lifted, it is still facing some of the pandemic’s effects as it reopens and recovers.
Following the lifting of Eagle County’s mask requirement on May 19, the rec center was able to phase out of many of its COVID-19 policies and procedures including social distancing requirements and reservations. Now, reservations are no longer required to use the rec center’s amenities.
This also includes the return of a normal summer of programs and events.
