Pillar of the community, Aurora James, known to friends and family as Irma, died on March 31. Mrs James, who had lived on the Blackbird Leys estate for 55 years, was well-known in the community for her charity work. She began volunteering for the Sailors’ Society in 1988 after her late husband Eli James encouraged her to become a fundraiser. She said back in 2018, when she was celebrating 30 years of volunteering for the charity: “I knew nothing about Sailors’ Society - Eli gave me the push to do it. “Old age is getting the better of me but for them, and for my husband, I will go the extra mile. It is a permanent memorial to him.”

Mike Waddell has always enjoyed taking photos, but it wasn’t until about 10 years ago that he began to take it seriously. “I got started with nature photography and also developed a real obsession with seeking out abandoned homes and buildings to photograph,” he says.
“The photography I was doing suited my more introverted nature well,” he explains. “But over time, I have come
to enjoy working with other creative people doing creative portraiture, visual storytelling, and narrative photography, often with a fantastic realism mood.”
His work has been exhibited locally at the I Fell, Blueline, Untitled Light, and Tattoo Kaiju galleries, as well as the Monroe County Public Library. In his latest project, “Reverberations,” he uses his own photos of abandoned places and found portraits from the 1940s and earlier to create composites.
