Darkness into Light: Stories of recovery and support

Updated / Wednesday, 5 May 2021 11:44 In this special episode of You OK?, and to mark Darkness Into Light, we discuss the significance of the event to those impacted by self-harm and suicide as well as exploring stories of recovery and supports available through Pieta. Leigh Kenny who is the Regional Clinical Manager at Pieta explains how people experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harming can engage with Pieta, what their supports look like as well as offering practical advice for friends and family hoping to support a loved one in crisis. One of Pieta s Ambassadors, Lawson Mpame, shares his experience of being a textbook bottler when it came to sharing his feelings with others and how this led to frightening thoughts of suicide. Lawson sought help for his depression and with the help of a supportive friend group, he is now committed to being open and honest about how he’s feeling, while encouraging others to do the same.

  CALGARY Along with walking, running, cycling or hiking, Calgarians are invited to take in the sunrise on May 8 as part of Darkness Into Light in support of suicide prevention. The fundraiser is part of a series of events being held around the globe organized by Pieta Ireland s leading suicide prevention charity with the local effort done in partnership with the Calgary Distress Centre, which provides 24-hour support to those experiencing personal or emotional crisis through its phone line at 403-266-4357. Around the world, close to 800,000 people take their own lives each year, which equates to one person every 40 seconds.

Instead of up to 10,000 people converging on Thomond Park for the annual Darkness into Light walk, Pieta is urging local people to sign up and mark the sunrise on Saturday, May 8 to show support for those impacted by suicide. Whether it be writing a sunshine note, walking within what is allowed under Covid-19 restrictions, swimming, hiking or biking, the suicide prevention charity hopes local people will support the event.
