Kildare people urged to sign up for socially-distanced Darkness into Light events

Kildare people urged to sign up for socially-distanced Darkness into Light events Reporter:   ); Kildare people are invited to sign up for Darkness into Light 2021 which will take place at sunrise on the morning of Saturday, May 8 but won t be a series of mass gatherings as in previous years due to Covid-19 restrictions. The event, which is sponsored by Electric Ireland, will be asking all supporters to don their yellow t-shirts and take part in the event at a time and in a location that suits them. Participants may walk, swim, bike or simply share your sunrise moment. Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been impacted by suicide.

It gives people the opportunity to feel that solidarity : Louise Cooney on the power of Darkness Into Light

Louise lost a cousin to suicide in 2019, and since then she s worked with Pieta House on their Signs of Suicide campaign to encourage the public to recognise suicide ideation in others. It goes without saying that the past year has taken a toll on many people s mental health, and Pieta House has felt the brunt of the pandemic within its operations. For instance, calls to the mental health organisation increased by 25%. In line with safety measures, the organisation had to adapt in order to continue to provide vital mental health support. Their pivot to virtual counselling proved a challenging but necessary adaption over the last year.
