Monday’s IPL cricket match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Ahmedabad has been postponed after two KKR players Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier – tested positive for COVID-19.
According to a statement issued by the IPL, Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier were found to be positive in the third round of testing in the last four days.
All other team members have tested negative for COVID -19.
“Both the players have isolated themselves from the rest of the squad. The Medical Team is in continuous touch with the duo and are monitoring their health. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Knight Riders have now moved towards a daily testing routine to identify any other possible cases and treat them at the earliest,” the statement read.

While the entire KKR team has gone for a six-day hard quarantine, starting Sunday, after Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier returned positive for COVID-19, Balaji, who is a regular feature in the Chennai Super Kings dug-out has gone into isolation after returning with two RT-PCR positives on Monday.

The Indian Premier Leagueâs 2021 edition is being played in India in the backdrop of a savage and devastating surge in COVID-19 cases. While the first set of matches were played in Mumbai and Chennai, the tournament has moved to Ahmedabad and New Delhi â both cities that have seen massive spikes in cases and daily deaths.
At last count, India recorded four lakh cases and over 3,500 deaths â both numbers that experts believe are a ‘significant undercountâ. Just Delhiâs positivity rate is now at 31.76%. In an environment where citizens are struggling to get tested, receive test results and access basic medical support like oxygen, the IPL bio bubbles have an army of systems in place to protect the players.
The IPL is currently on in separate bio-secure environments but BCCI will face perhaps its biggest test of managing a big-ticket ICC tournament in adverse circumstances. We are still hopeful that with five months left and a significant population being vaccinated, we will be in a position to host the T20 World Cup. An ICC recce team was supposed to reach Delhi on April 26 to inspect the bio-secure arrangements for the IPL, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup but the travel bans imposed on India led to the postponement of the trip.
