Many people and law enforcement veterans have come out in support for Phillips being appointed to the position by the Board of Supervisors. Marshall County residents are expressing their support for Joel Phillips to be named the next Marshall County Sheriff. Phillips, 52, of State Center, has a long history with the sheriff’s office and, according to numerous letters and verbal praises, is an exemplary law enforcement official. He served as the chief deputy for former Sheriff Steve Hoffman before Hoffman resigned from his post on Monday.

More than three years of planning, construction and fundraising has all led to Monday’s open house at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. “We’re excited to finally unveil it to the community and let people check it out,” Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Director Geoff Hubbard said. Hubbard has overseen the renovation project, beginning with a fundraiser in 2019 raising $1.35 million for construction. The renovation of Marshalltown’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum is complete after more than a year of construction, and the general public is invited to an open house from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday to see the finished building.

Bolton and Menk shed light on several possible changes coming to the downtown area during a virtual open house on Wednesday. More than 50 interested attendees logged on via Zoom to watch the Downtown Implementation Plan presentation, participate in a poll on some ideas and ask questions. The ideas discussed during the open house were based on the results of a recent public survey. “One of the project objectives is to develop a plan for implementation based on the recommendations of the 2019 Downtown Master Plan,” said Casey Byers, senior project manager with Bolton and Menk. “This is essentially an extension of that project.”

tbabcock@timesrepublican.com CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS The Marshalltown Arts and Culture Alliance is seeking an artist to create a large scale artwork for permanent installation at the Marshalltown Performing Arts Center Putting out a call to artists, the Marshall County Arts and Culture Alliance is seeking commissions for three public art projects. The projects include a work of art for permanent installation at the Marshalltown Performing Arts Center, a mural for the Marshalltown Animal Rescue League and a mural at McGregors Furniture and Mattress on Main Street. The permanent installation of art at Marshalltown Performing Arts Center is a long-term project, potentially taking up to 18 months to two years to complete, said Marshall County Arts and Culture Alliance Executive Director Amber Danielson. The project is slated to be completed by the end of this year.
