At a community engagement meeting on Wednesday, Marshalltown residents gave their input to Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee members on updates and additions they would like to see at Elks Park.
Community suggestions included a splash pad, soccer goals, a dog play area, natural seating and some interactive playground equipment. Residents also expressed a preference to see the basketball courts updated and additions made to the open space in the park.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper spoke with a somber tone when introducing the first report from MPACT to the Marshalltown City Council during a regular meeting Monday.
First, Tupper acknowledged Sgt. Jim Smith, an Iowa State Patrol officer who was killed during a shootout in Grundy Center on Friday. Then he mentioned two other Iowa law enforcement officers who committed suicide in the last week. And he discussed the shooting of 20-year-old Duante Wright who was killed by police during a traffic stop in Minneapolis on Sunday.

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum has two reasons to cherish March 15. Not only was that day Monday used as the day of the grand reopening and rededication, but 90 years ago, residents of Marshalltown gathered to do the same thing on March 15.
Roughly 60 city officials and people active in the reopening, watched the rededication ceremony and listened to a variety of people speak about their memory of the Coliseum.

More than three years of planning, construction and fundraising has all led to Monday’s open house at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
“We’re excited to finally unveil it to the community and let people check it out,” Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Director Geoff Hubbard said. Hubbard has overseen the renovation project, beginning with a fundraiser in 2019 raising $1.35 million for construction.
The renovation of Marshalltown’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum is complete after more than a year of construction, and the general public is invited to an open house from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday to see the finished building.
