A southern Manitoba hospital physician says staff are exhausted by a recent crush of admissions, but they re also up against something else that s draining energy and morale.
Staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre are routinely hearing from sick and unvaccinated patients who believe the pandemic is a hoax some remaining defiant even on the brink of death.

When four-year-old Carson Labossiere was diagnosed with leukemia, the family received the news at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg. Their home is two-and-a-half hours away, south of Darlingford. Having come to the city straight from Boundary Trails Health Centre in Winkler, they arrived in Winnipeg with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
At the end of August 2020, Carson was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an extremely aggressive form of the disease. The severity of the situation forced the family to remain in Winnipeg. Fortunately, hospital staff knew where they could find help. Dena Labossiere, Carson’s mother has nothing but praise for the care they received.

Another seven Manitobans were reported dead due to COVID-19 on Tuesday as public health officials announced 130 new cases of the virus in the province.
Four of Tuesday’s fatalities are linked to ongoing outbreaks at long-term care facilities in Manitoba, including a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s from River East Personal Care Home. A man in his 90s from Holy Family Home and a woman in her 70s from Le Chalet de la Broquerie Assisted Living facility were also deaths connected to outbreaks.
