Bunga Bunga owners in £3m court fight over Covid claim

The owners of Bunga Bunga – the London nightclub once frequented by Prince Harry – are preparing a legal battle to recover millions of pounds in an insurance dispute. Inception Group, co-founded by Duncan Stirling and Charlie Gilkes, paid £130,000 for comprehensive annual insurance cover for 11 bars, restaurants and clubs in London, including Mr Fogg’s, Maggie’s and the Barts speakeasy. The group filed a claim in March last year after Prime Minister Boris Johnson told people to stay away from bars and restaurants, triggering an immediate collapse in revenues. Food Alert: has Covid-19 accelerated the rise of digital compliance?

A renewed appreciation of the power of technology is one of Covid-19’s enduring on-trade symptoms according to Food Alert’s operations director Mike Williams. Virtual communication has become the norm and, for most of us, our ‘screen time’ has increased enormously since March,” Williams says. “It has also enabled things that were once deemed impossible to be possible – from GPs running virtual patient appointments to teachers hosting online classes.” He adds that hospitality compliance hasn’t been immune to this digitisation, with tech solutions likely here to stay even among operators who’d previously fallen back on excuses including being “too busy”, “too much hassle” and “this is how we’ve always done it” to thwart the virtual takeover.

British pie week

British pie week 3rd Mar 2016 11:53am | By James Clark It is no secret that British adventurer, Phileas J Fogg, can be a little eccentric. In celebration of his favourite British dish, he’s offering his famous pies for no more than a quid during British pie week. Feast on Mr Fogg’s homemade Dedham Vale beef, suet pastry and home smoked Dingley Dell bacon pie with mashed potatoes, British greens and braising liquor from the 7th to the 11th of March, from 12pm until 4.30pm. Mr Fogg’s Tavern is the eighth project from Charlie Gilkes’ and Duncan Stirling’s Inception Group and houses London’s largest collection of gins. Based on the adventures of Jules Verne’s fictional explorer, Phileas Fogg, Mr Fogg’s Tavern has an upstairs downstairs theatrical theme with a Victorian pub on the ground floor and a refined Gin Parlour (I love gin) and Salon upstairs.
