Metro Manila residents are priming themselves up for a return to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) on August 6 to August 20, and the restrictions could not come at a better time as the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections turned out to be the highest since June for two days in a row. The business sector welcomed the decision to revert back to the strictest quarantine level for two weeks, even as the government vowed to undertake massive vaccination during this period. Meanwhile, rains are projected to continue through the weekend as the southwest monsoon, or “habagat”, continued to affect the western parts of Luzon.

High SO2 emission in Taal Volcano affecting residents

Published June 14, 2021, 2:46 PM By Joenald M. Rayos TAAL VOLCANOAGONCILLO, Batangas – Residents of three barangays here experienced throat irritation and observed sudden dry-out of vegetation that killed crops, plants, and trees after rainshowers as sulfur dioxide emission over Taal Volcano increased, the municipal agricultural office reported. “This (occurrence) is unprecedented,” Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) Director Renato Solidum Jr. said although the residents are not advised to evacuate yet. The Phivolcs advised the public Saturday, June 12, to take the necessary precautions, as high levels of SO2 emission have been observed in the Taal Volcano Main Crater in the past two days as measured by “campaign UV spectrometry” around the Taal Lake shore.
